Jamie Oliver backs campaign against KFC opening near Solihull school

Campaigners fighting plans for a KFC restaurant near a Solihull school have won the backing of Jamie Oliver.

Parents contacted the celebrity chef as part of their opposition to the proposed drive-thru in Stratford Road, Shirley.

They fear the site is too close to Shirley Heath Junior School and could tempt children to snack on junk food.

And now they have the support of one of Britain’s most popular chefs after Oliver backed their cause.

A spokesman for the star told campaigner Will Mitchell: “Although Jamie cannot intervene in individual cases, he is on record as saying that he does not agree with fast food outlets being built and opened close to schools so he would share your concerns.”

Mr Mitchell, of Bishopton Close, Shirley, said he wanted Oliver’s support as he was renowned for fighting to improve children’s health and school meals.

“I am one of the closest residents to the proposed drive-through,” he said.

“KFC will basically be in my back yard.

“As a parent, I am extremely concerned. The last thing I want is my child hopping off the bus after school and going straight into KFC.

“My wife has had sleepless nights about this. We are worried about other children, the smell and even the vermin this could cause.

“The only positive I can see is that it will create more jobs.”

Other residents have also contacted Solihull Council to raise objections to the scheme, which would see the outlet remain open until 11pm.

Another opponent of the proposal, Simon Bright said: “I do not believe another fast food chain is the right thing.

“Shirley Heath School is next door and there is far too much temptation for impressionable school children to go in there after school to eat fried chicken.”

In documents submitted to the council, agents for KFC said the development would create up to 40 jobs and the company picked up litter up to 100 metres from its restaurants up to four times a day.
